With all of your hard work as a birth attendant — a midwife, a doctor, a nurse, lactation consultant, or other birthworker — it can feel like there’s a laundry list of things to do to keep advocating for your clients.

You’ve had extensive training in evidence-based practices caring for perinatal women. You understand what you need to about the law. You know your ethical obligations backwards and forwards. Most of all, you are always working to provide the absolute best in care.

But what about your clients’ legal rights?

How do you explain those concepts? How do you make sure they really understand and know how to advocate for themselves – especially for those who may need a hospital transfer? Will they be prepared to be their own best advocate, with all the unknowns and possible situations in birth?

We at Your Legal Doula believe there are other steps you can take that haven’t been explored by the health care field: including using legal information and client-focused education to limit provider liability, increase client satisfaction, and reduce the number of complaints – and, to start battling the CDC statistic that shows that 1 in 5 women experience mistreatment during birth.

1 in 5

women experience mistreatment during birth, according to the CDC. We know you’re already doing your part, as a passionate advocate of birth justice. But there is more we can do.

What You Gain

When your clients purchase the Birth Rights Course, they’ll gain the legal knowledge and self-advocacy skills. And, you get the benefit of:

Client Satisfaction

Increasing client satisfaction and knowledge.

Lower Risk

Decreasing your risk of lawsuits, board complaints – because when your clients can self-advocate during care, they will not only have a better relationship with you; they will know what to do if their care arrangement changes (e.g., a hospital transfer, or other urgent situation).

20% Referral Fee

20% of each sale — $70–90 per sale, depending on what specials are running.

Give Back: Free Access for Your Medicaid Clients

To protect your clients’ privacy, no names are ever shared: just number your Medicaid clients privately and email Andi at andi@yourlegaldoula.com with the total. Andi will draw a number and send you a free-access code for that client.

Your Legal Doula was founded with the mission of ensuring that everyone‘s birth rights are legally protected. This means families first, of course: but also doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas, and others without whose care safe and supported birth cannot happen. We aim to increase the entire birth community’s sense of cooperation, safety, and satisfaction.

Andi’s Story

Andi, the founder of Your Legal Doula, has experienced this problem from multiple angles.

“This is ridiculous,” I thought, poring over the records from my unplanned C-section. “I’m literally an attorney and I still don’t understand what I’m entitled to!”

I was just a few weeks postpartum and already back to work. I’d had a couple half-days as I transitioned back to the office, into a role with double the volume and double the responsibility as compared to the role I’d left at 9 months pregnant. I had intense “mom brain,” was pumping 3-4x a day at my desk, and I was having serious doubts about whether the “consent” I had given to my induction was actually “informed.”

Frankly, I was miserable.

I was missing my baby; I was hormonal; I was in no position to advocate for myself or to pore through statutes to try to understand where my employers and providers had potentially failed me.

And no one had prepared me to be here.

If I couldn’t advocate for myself – me: a trained litigator – what woman in Nevada possibly could?

Does this sense of frustration resonate?

While we can never predict how a birth will go, you as a provider can shield your clients from coercion, overwhelm, and unintentional mistreatment — and shield yourself from liability in the process.

How do we do that? What could I have been offered, as a client during my pregnancy, that would have helped me avoid this sense of confusion and dissatisfaction?

Your Legal Doula’s Birth Rights Course will empower your birthing clients with a specific framework: to understand, assert, and protect their birth rights.

1

Understand

They must understand their rights inside and out, so they know which ones are relevant to them – and what laws back up those rights.

2

Assert

They must assert their rights: saying out loud what they want, so that you are not left second-guessing about your client’s internal state — their informed consent.

3

Protect

And they must protect themselves after any perceived violation of their birth rights. This includes your internal complaint procedures, which all your birthing clients should know about backwards and forwards.

This course will break down each of these components into digestible, actionable steps — so that you do not have to spend time legally training the people to whom you should be spending your time providing excellent health care.

Your Clients Need This

First-time moms

You have clients who are first-time moms, feeling uncertain about their rights while pregnant – or while giving birth – or once the baby is born.

Experienced moms

You have clients who are second- or many-time moms. Some of them think they understand their rights… but may feel there was something “off” about the care they received the first time around. Or the way they were treated at work, when requesting pregnancy accommodations.

Lost confidence

Worse; you’ve got clients who have lost confidence in themselves and in the health care system, because they think that if there was a problem, the fault was with you — that you didn’t “do enough” to get their rights respected.

Whatever their knowledge level; whatever their comfort level: Your Legal Doula’s Birth Rights Course is designed to equip your perinatal clients with the legal knowledge and advocacy skills to navigate their rights with confidence.

Why Give Your Clients Access to This Course?

Do you worry this will make them more likely to complain, or even sue?

Just the opposite.

Many women go through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum without knowing their rights – to their detriment. This is not a secret: we know we live in the country with the worst maternal health outcomes among high-income nations. Satisfaction with the birth experience, while never guaranteed and not always possible, is nowhere near what it should be. And concerns about litigious clients keep us all on edge. The lack of transparency and legal knowledge in the culture at large plays a huge part in this problem.

When your clients don’t understand – let alone assert – their rights, they are vulnerable — and so are you.

When you empower your clients with what they need to know about informed consent and their treatment options, they are more likely to let you know where they stand, and to let you know if there is something they don’t understand.

Since you don’t always have the time to train your clients in this way, that’s where we come in!

This course gives your clients the legal know-how, practical tools, and strategies and confidence to ensure that you work together as a team in getting them respectful, evidence-based care and equitable treatment.

Course FAQ

How much is the Birth Rights Course, and what will my referral fee be?

The affiliate rate is 20% of the Course fee at the time of sale, including any ongoing promotions. Depending on what specials are running, your referral fee is $70–90 per sale. Occasionally, we have Mothers’ Day or other seasonal promotions, which would lead to a lower referral fee (but, savings for your clients!). Your clients also save 5% off the currently listed price when they use your affiliate code, even during a sale, and your 20% is calculated on the price they pay.

Is there a way to help my Medicaid clients access the Course?

Yes! Each month you have at least one Course sign-up through your affiliate code, one of your Medicaid clients will receive free access to the Birth Rights Course — chosen at random by Andi, so every client has an equal chance. To protect your clients’ privacy, no names are ever shared: just number your Medicaid clients privately and email Andi at andi@yourlegaldoula.com with the total. Andi will draw a number and send you a free-access code for that client.

I’m a doula in another state — can I be an affiliate?

Yes! The Birth Rights Course covers birth rights at the federal level, so wherever you are in the United States, it will apply to your clients.

How do the live calls work?

Once a month, via Zoom, Your Legal Doula hosts a live membership call to answer your clients’ questions about the material in the Birth Rights Course. No recordings of these calls are provided, due to HIPAA concerns; however, if Your Legal Doula observes a common concern or theme in your clients’ questions, we will notify you and work with you to address it.

How long will my clients have access to the course?

Once an individual purchases the Birth Rights Course, they are guaranteed access as long as Your Legal Doula hosts the Course. This means that even postpartum moms and others who may want to brush up on their birth rights can do so even when not actively receiving care. This includes any updates to the Course – which will occur periodically as the law changes in the world of birth rights.
