Here, you will find answers to some frequently asked questions (“FAQ”) about Your Legal Doula and your birth rights. Please contact us with specific inquiries!

About Your Legal Doula’s Offerings

• “What does Your Legal Doula actually offer?”
  • As of April 2026, Your Legal Doula offers to all U.S. Residents (/those with a legal issue in the United States):
    • All information found for free on this website and on our social medial platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Threads), @yourlegaldoula
    • The Birth Rights Course – a self-paced guide on how to self-advocate during the perinatal period
    • Birth-worker template agreements (including customizable Doula–Client contracts)
    • Click the Services & Pricing menu item to start working with Your Legal Doula!
  • As of April 2026, Your Legal Doula offers to all Nevada Residents (/those with a legal issue in Nevada):
    • Nevada-specific guides – coming soon
      • These guides will include how to draft a “legally-informed” birth plan and how to assert your rights as a pregnant employee in the state of Nevada
    • Legal services to Nevada residents.
      • In this case, you retain Your Legal Doula as your attorney, and we help you with whatever legal issue you may be facing relating to pregnancy and birth.

• “What does it look like to retain Your Legal Doula?”
  • As founder of Your Legal Doula, and as a licensed attorney, Andi can provide legal advice, advocacy, and services directly. You must have a legal issue in Nevada to retain Andi as an attorney!
  • At your complimentary consultation, we discuss the facts of your pregnancy and/or birth, so that your lawyer will fully understand how to help protect your rights–before or after they are violated. We also work together to figure out your customized legal package. That is – what do you actually need a lawyer’s help for?
    • Understanding the law, so you can protect your rights?
    • Asserting your rights, so you can prevent a violation? Or…
    • Protecting your rights, after a violation has already occurred?
  • Most often, you will retain Your Legal Doula for “unbundled legal services”–meaning, you only pay for for the services you need, as you need them.
  • Some examples of work that you can retain Your Legal Doula to do are:
    • Drafting and editing your Nevada-based doula contract
    • Researching what rights your employer might have violated, given legal protections for pregnant workers
    • Drafting a customized Legally-Informed Birth Plan
    • Filing a Board Complaint with a Nevada entity
    • Appealing an Insurance Decision
    • Proposing a plan for Maternity Leave from work
    • Something else we’ve discussed…

About Your Birth Rights Course

• “Can anyone take the Birth Rights Course?”
  • Yes! The Course is available to anyone – of any sex, gender, race, sexuality, or ability. Though aimed primarily at mothers who are physically carrying or have carried children, the information provided in the Course (Parts I, II, and III) covers rights in the areas of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum for all people living in the United States. (Because let’s face it; we need some help out here. *insert melting face emoji*)
• “Can birth workers take the Course?”
  • Yes! Although the Course is designed specifically for families, it certainly includes information that may be helpful to doulas, midwives, and others who care for pregnant women. We are currently considering future launches – so if you are a provider and you are interested in a Birth Rights Course specifically designed for you, please get in touch!
• “Do you offer state-specific information?”
  • Soon! When you purchase the Course, you will soon have the option of selecting the state in which you reside. If we currently cover your state, you can receive state-specific modules (Part IV) for a small additional fee.
• “Is Part IV available for my state?”
  • Currently, Your Legal Doula only offers state-specific information for the State of Nevada. Stay tuned, Tennessee and Georgia!
• “What if I’ve already given birth? Can/should I still take the course?”
  • Absolutely! As I discuss in Part III, sometimes we don’t learn that our rights have been violated until long after the fact. Sometimes it is too late to sue someone (if you decide that you want to go that far) – but it is never too late to learn about your human rights, or even to reach out to your health care or medical providers. Sometimes knowing that we did have the right to certain treatment, even if we didn’t get what we were entitled to, can help us process feelings of grief and trauma.

About Legal Education and Information

• “What do you mean when you say something is ‘not legal advice’?”
  • Legal information is just that: information. It includes general facts about laws, your rights, and how the legal system works. It applies to everyone. That’s what Your Legal Doula offers with our templates and other resources that can help you use your rights and advocate for yourself! Legal advice is something more specific. It’s when a lawyer gives personalized guidance based on someone’s unique circumstances. Only a licensed attorney can give legal advice. You can retain Andi, founder of Your Legal Doula, so that she can give you legal advice – but only if you have a legal issue in Nevada, which is where she is licensed. • “Why are your educational resources only available in the U.S.? And why are some of them limited to certain states??”
  • All jurisdictions, all around the world, have different laws. Different countries, different states – even different counties. Because Andi is a lawyer trained in the U.S., her knowledge and expertise is limited to American law. It would be against Andi’s ethical obligations to provide legal information about a country in whose law she is not trained. And, because states have their own employment, discrimination, medical, and other laws, legal information varies by state. Without state-specific guidance, it is impossible to know the full extent of your rights under the law. We’re working on it; and as Your Legal Doula grows, we’ll be able to offer more state-specific resources!
• “I can’t afford your fees, the Birth Rights Course, a template, or any paid resources right now. Where can I learn more about this stuff for free?”

About Andi

• “Is Andi an actual doula?”
  • No. Andrea is a licensed attorney in the state of Nevada. She is not a medical or healthcare professional, nor is she a doula certified with any organization (including DONA International). “Your Legal Doula” is simply the name of her company; just like a doula helps you mentally and physically during your birth process, Your Legal Doula can help you with legal information during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.  
• “Can Andi help me with a legal question or problem?”
  • If you reside in the State of Nevada, Andi is happy to provide a free 15-20 minute consultation to see if she can help with a legal issue. Andi currently accepts clients in Nevada for legal issues related to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. If she cannot help you directly, the consult may include a referral to an attorney in the specialty or area of practice you need help with. 
• “I want to sue my doctor/my midwife/my hospital. Can Andi represent me?”
  • If you live in Nevada! And, it depends. Currently, Andi does not directly represent plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases, but she can help as you begin to coordinate your legal team. Visit the Contact page to schedule a free consultation.
