Despite all of your hard work as a birth attendant–a midwife, a doctor, a nurse, or other medical professional–it can feel like there are landmines everywhere you step.
You’ve had extensive training in evidence-based practices caring for perinatal women. You understand what you need to about Nevada law. You know your ethical obligations backwards and forwards. Most of all, you are always working to provide the absolute best in care.
But the threat of lawsuits looms.
Client/patient satisfaction isn’t what it should be.
Client retention and referrals may suffer.
While you know that some factors in the uncertainty of perinatal practice are always going to be out of your control, you may not be aware that you can take additional steps to protect yourself and your clients.
We at Your Legal Doula believe there are other steps you can take that haven’t been explored by the health care field: including using legal information and client-focused education to limit liability, increase satisfaction, and reduce the number of complaints and lawsuits received. We intend to use our legal knowledge to lessen the amount of lawsuits, Medical Board complaints, and other unfortunate consequences of perceived birth rights violations.
Your Legal Doula was founded with the mission of ensuring that everyone‘s birth rights are legally protected. This means families first, of course: but also doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas, and others without whose care safe and supported birth cannot happen. We aim to increase the entire birth community’s sense of cooperation, safety, and satisfaction.

“This is ridiculous,” I thought, pouring over the records from my unplanned C-section. “I’m literally an attorney and I still don’t understand what I’m entitled to!”
I was just a few weeks postpartum and already back to work. I’d had a couple half-days as I transitioned back to the office, into a role with double the volume and double the responsibility as compared to the role I’d left at 9 months pregnant. I had intense “mom brain,” was pumping 3-4x a day at my desk, and I was having serious doubts about whether the “consent” I had given to my induction was actually “informed.”
Frankly, I was miserable.
I was missing my baby; I was hormonal; I was in no position to advocate for myself or to pour through statutes to try to understand where my employers and providers had potentially failed me.
And no one had prepared me to be here.
If I couldn’t advocate for myself – me: a trained litigator – what woman in Nevada possibly could?

Does this sense of frustration resonate?
While we can never predict how a birth will go, you as a provider can shield your clients from coercion, overwhelm, and unintentional mistreatment–and shield yourself from liability in the process.
How do we do that?
What could I have been offered, as a client during my pregnancy, that would have helped me avoid this sense of confusion and dissatisfaction?
Your Legal Doula’s Birth Rights Course will empower your birthing clients with a specific framework: to understand, assert, and protect their birth rights.
- They must understand their rights inside and out, so they know which ones are relevant to them – and what laws back up those rights.
- They must assert our rights: saying out loud what they want, so that you are not left second-guessing about your client’s internal state–their informed .
- And they must protect themselves after any perceived violation of their birth rights. This includes your internal complaint procedures, which all your birthing clients should know about backwards and forwards.
This course will break down each of these components into digestible, actionable steps–so that you do not have to spend time legally training the people to whom you should be spending your time providing excellent health care.
You have clients who are first-time moms, feeling uncertain about their rights while pregnant – or while giving birth – or once the baby is born.
You have clients who are second- or many-time moms. Some of them think they understand their rights… but may feel there was something “off” about the care they received the first time around. Or the way they were treated at work, when requesting pregnancy accommodations.
Worse; you’ve got clients who have lost confidence in themselves and in the health care system, because they think that if there was a problem, the fault was with you–that you didn’t “do enough” to get their rights respected.
Whatever their knowledge level; whatever their comfort level: Your Legal Doula’s Birth Rights Course is designed to equip your perinatal clients with the legal knowledge and advocacy skills to navigate their rights with confidence.

Why Give Your Clients Access to This Course?
Do you worry this will make them more likely to complain, or even sue?
Just the opposite.
Many women go through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum without knowing their rights – to their detriment. This is not a secret: we know we live in the industrialized country with the worst birth outcomes in the world. Satisfaction with the birth experience, while never guaranteed and not always possible, is nowhere near what it should be. And concerns about litigious clients keep us all on edge. The lack of transparency and legal knowledge in the culture at large plays a huge part in this problem.
When your clients don’t understand – let alone assert – their rights, they are vulnerable–and so are you.
When you empower your clients with what they need to know about informed consent and their treatment options, they are more likely to let you know where they stand, and to let you know if there is something they don’t understand.
Since you don’t always have the time to train your clients in this way, that’s where we come in!
This course gives your clients the legal know-how, practical tools, and strategies and confidence to ensure that you work together as a team in getting them respectful, evidence-based care and equitable treatment.
Course FAQ
Q: How much does the Birth Rights Course cost to license?
A: Our licensing fee is based on 1) the size of your practice, and 2) the number of clients who will be accessing the course. We offer a “small practice” discount for practices that handle 10 or fewer pregnancies/births per year. For larger practices, there is a flat fee for the first 25 clients, after which the price-tiers depends upon the number of additional students who will access the Course.
Q: Can you customize or co-brand?
A: Yes! When you license the Birth Rights Course, you receive materials that are co-branded. This means that while the name of the Course and Your Legal Doula’s logo will remain place, we can customize the fonts, colors, and other aspects of your clients’ experience so that you are the hero of this illuminating experience. We put your logo in pride of place and refer to your practice by name. In addition, we always include a module on your specific practice’s policies and procedures, everything from handling complaints to transfers. Other aspects of the Course may be customizable, for an additional fee, at your request.
Q: What is the turnaround time?
A: Currently, the turnaround time for creating your customized Course materials is 60-90 days. Further timeline details will be discussed before any contract is signed.
Q: How do the live calls work?
A: Once a week, via Zoom, Your Legal Doula hosts a live, invitation-only call to answer your clients’ questions about the material in the Birth Rights Course. This means that each session includes your clients and only your clients: so there will be no confusion based on different providers’ policies. Because of this level of customization, clients must register at least a week in advance; and if no clients register, there will be no call. No recordings of these calls are provided, due to HIPAA concerns; however, if Your Legal Doula observes a common concern or theme in your clients’ questions, we will notify you and work with you to address it.
Q: How will my clients use the 1:1 call? What is “coaching”? Are you becoming my clients’ attorney?
A: When you license the Birth Rights Course, your clients each receive a 1:1 coaching call, intended for use after they’ve complete the course. This coaching call is intended to answer any of their lingering questions about the material and what specific concerns they have. Your Legal Doula does not become their attorney–rather, we’re acting more as a neutral “legal coach” for the hour. They can bring up everything from how to lodge concerns, to how to use your formal complaint procedures. Far from being a disadvantage to you: when we make these procedures transparent, our clients’ trust in us vastly increases.
Q: How long will my clients have access to the course?
A: Once you license the Birth Rights Course, your clients are guaranteed access as long as your license with Your Legal Doula lasts. This means that even postpartum moms and others who may want to brush up on their birth rights can do so even when not actively receiving care. This includes any updates to the Course – which will occur periodically as the law changes in the world of birth rights.
