Birth Rights Course
The Birth Rights Course is Your Legal Doula’s flagship educational offering – a full breakdown of your rights while pregnant, giving birth, and newly postpartum in the U.S.

For Families
For Providers
It’s no wonder we have questions about our birth rights.
Those questions can be overwhelming. It can feel like the law isn’t really on our side, or that no one is really our ally when it comes to making sure out rights are respected. It can be misleading, confusing–downright discouraging; after all, our rights depend on where exactly we are located (jurisdiction) and the type of employer or provider we are trying to assert our rights with (private company, government entity, hospital, birth center, provider who accepts Medicaid, etc…) And whether or not an individual provider or employer respects our rights seems to be a complete coin toss.
But you do not have to be confused or uncertain.
The Birth Rights Course is for families like yours–whether you’re giving birth, or supporting one. If you are a first-time mom, you may be unsure or less-than-confident about your rights. And if you’re a partner, you may not know how to help advocate for your loved one. If you’re a second- or many-time mom, you may have suffered due to this uncertainty: or, perhaps you thought you understood you rights, but when push came to shove, you weren’t able to advocate for yourself.
Maybe you’re just not sure you can ever do “enough” to protect you birth rights.
Comprised of three major sections, this self-paced program empowers you with a specific framework to know your rights inside and out. When you’ve completed the course, you’ll be able to confidently step into any setting, knowing what law protects you while you are pregnant, giving birth, and postpartum–and, how to use that legal framework to self-advocate.
In the Birth Rights Course, you’ll learn to:
- Understand your birth rights – to know exactly what rights you have and where they come from. We have inherent, fundamental rights as human beings. We also have basic rights as citizens of the world, and – more specifically – as people who live in the U.S. So what are the rights of those preparing to, giving, and recovering from birth in the U.S.?
- Assert your birth rights – to be able to insist on your rights in all circumstances – and make people pay attention. We will walk you through legally-informed scripts for talking to an employer, a health care provider, or a hospital administrator. Being able to stand your ground and assert your rights is a skill that you can – and must – learn.
- Protect your birth rights – to be able to take the next step when someone stands between you and your rights. Sometimes you only need steps 1 and 2. Sometimes you need step 3: a complaint, a mediation session, a lawsuit, an appeal, or some other mechanism to defend your rights. (It’s OK to choose the nuclear option when circumstances call for it; you are not “too much” for knowing your circumstances call for it.)
