Did you know? Nevada is one of only twelve states currently offering coverage for doula services under its Medicaid program – being only the sixth state in the U.S. to require this coverage. While dozens of other states are on their way to doing the same, Nevada was on the cutting-edge of this important expansion of coverage.

Navigating pregnancy and childbirth can be an overwhelming experience, especially when access to resources and support varies greatly depending on where you live – and the resources you can access there. But if you’re in Nevada, you have a unique advantage: Nevada Medicaid covers the services of doulas. This coverage sets Nevada apart, making it one of the few states where expecting mothers can access doula care through Medicaid—an essential support that not all states provide.
As a mother and legal advocate, I know firsthand the difference that quality support can make during pregnancy and birth. Here’s why Nevada’s Medicaid coverage for doulas is a crucial benefit, and how it can positively impact your pregnancy journey.
What is a Doula and Why Does Having One Matter?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a person before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike a doctor or midwife, a doula does not perform medical tasks but instead focuses on providing comfort, education, and advocacy. Studies have shown that the presence of a doula can lead to better birth outcomes, including shorter labors, lower rates of cesarean sections, and increased satisfaction with the birth experience.
For many, hiring a doula can be financially out of reach, as the cost of doula services typically ranges from $800 to $2,500. This expense is not covered by most private insurance plans, which means many women have to pay out of pocket. (Me! I did!) That’s where Nevada Medicaid’s coverage steps in, making doula services accessible to those who might not otherwise afford this vital support.
Nevada’s Unique Advantage: Medicaid Doula Coverage
Nevada’s Medicaid program is among the few in the country that recognizes the critical role doulas play in improving maternal and infant outcomes.1 This inclusion is particularly significant, as not all states offer this benefit. In fact, many states still lag in recognizing doula services as reimbursable expenses through Medicaid.
The decision to include doulas under Medicaid in Nevada is part of a broader effort to address maternal health disparities, particularly among low-income communities and women of color who statistically face higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth. By making doula care accessible, Nevada is taking proactive steps to ensure that more mothers have the tools and support they need for healthier pregnancies and birth experiences.
How Nevada’s Doula Coverage Works
If you’re a Nevada resident enrolled in Medicaid and you’re pregnant, you may qualify for doula services at no additional cost. The process typically involves selecting a Medicaid-approved doula, who will then guide you through prenatal, birth, and postpartum support. This can include:
- Prenatal Support: Your doula can help you develop a birth plan, provide education about your options, and offer emotional support as you prepare for labor and delivery.
- Labor and Delivery: During labor, your doula remains by your side, providing continuous emotional and physical support, including techniques for pain management and relaxation. This consistent presence has been shown to reduce stress and improve outcomes.
- Postpartum Care: After birth, doulas can assist with breastfeeding, newborn care, and emotional recovery, helping you adjust to life with a new baby.
Access to these services through Medicaid means that mothers in Nevada have an opportunity to experience a more supported and informed birth experience without the financial burden. This is a significant advantage, as it directly addresses the accessibility and affordability of high-quality maternal care.
Why Doula Support Matters: The Impact on Maternal Health
The inclusion of doulas in Medicaid coverage isn’t just a symbolic gesture; it’s backed by a growing body of research that demonstrates the tangible benefits of having a doula. Here’s how doula support can make a difference:
- Reduced Cesarean Rates: Women supported by doulas are significantly less likely to have a cesarean section compared to those who do not have continuous labor support. This not only promotes safer births but also reduces recovery time and associated medical costs.
- Shorter Labors: Research indicates that the presence of a doula can lead to shorter labor durations. The continuous support and comfort techniques offered by doulas help mothers feel more at ease, allowing labor to progress naturally.
- Improved Birth Outcomes for Mothers of Color: Women of color, particularly Black women, face disproportionately high rates of complications and maternal mortality in the U.S. Doula support has been shown to improve outcomes and experiences for women of color by advocating for their needs and helping them navigate potential biases within the healthcare system.
- Emotional Support and Reduced Anxiety: Pregnancy and birth are both physically and emotionally demanding. A doula’s presence provides reassurance and emotional stability, leading to a more positive birth experience overall.
By including doula services in Medicaid, Nevada is helping to level the playing field, ensuring that women from all backgrounds have the support they need to achieve better outcomes.
How to Access Doula Services Through Nevada Medicaid
If you’re an expectant mother in Nevada and enrolled in Medicaid, here’s how you can take advantage of this valuable benefit:
- Check Your Eligibility: Make sure you are enrolled in Nevada Medicaid. If you are unsure about your status or eligibility, reach out to Medicaid services or a local support organization that can assist you in verifying and understanding your benefits.
- Find a Medicaid-Approved Doula: Nevada has a growing network of certified doulas who are approved Medicaid providers. Reach out to your Medicaid office for a list of doulas available in your area or visit the Nevada Doula Network to find a qualified doula.
- Contact and Connect: Once you have identified a doula, reach out and schedule an initial consultation. This is an opportunity to discuss your birth plan, ask questions, and ensure that the doula is a good fit for your needs and preferences. (If you and your doula need help drafting an agreement, we have a template for that.)
- Work with Your Doula Throughout Your Pregnancy: From prenatal visits to labor support and postpartum care, your doula will be there as a consistent, supportive presence. This your continuity of care is one of the greatest benefits of having a doula, allowing you to build trust and feel secure in your support system.
Looking Ahead: A Call for More States to Follow Nevada’s Lead
Nevada’s Medicaid coverage for doulas is a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. We need to see more states following Nevada’s lead and recognizing the importance of doula care. Medicaid coverage for doulas should not be a rare benefit—it should be a standard part of maternal healthcare across the nation.
By advocating for this change, we can work toward a future where all mothers have access to the support they need for safe, healthy, and empowered birth experiences. Nevada’s approach demonstrates that this is possible, and it should serve as a model for expanding access to comprehensive maternal care.
If you’re in Nevada, take advantage of this opportunity. It was not available when I was pregnant – and I’m so happy that moms in the Battle Born State now have this tool available. As always, if you have questions about how to navigate this issue or other legalities of your pregnancy, please feel free to reach out to us.
